Hire For Work (HFW) started as a simple idea inside Blowtrumpet: if we are going to build a company worth working at, we should also build a community worth belonging to. Not a talent pipeline. Not a recruiting funnel. A real, open community where professionals meet, learn from one another and grow together — whether or not they ever work with us.
We made a deliberate choice early on. HFW would not be gated behind our hiring needs. It would be open to everyone — engineers and designers, founders and freelancers, students just starting out and veterans who have seen three industry cycles. The community exists for its members, not for our headcount targets.
The best professional communities are not built around one company’s openings. They are built around shared ambition, honest conversations, and the kind of connections that compound over years.
The part I find hard to defend
I have sat on the hiring side of enough conversations with twenty-one-year-olds to find the ritual slightly embarrassing.
We ask someone to demonstrate they can do work nobody has ever permitted them to do. We read a résumé for nine seconds. We run a test that measures test-taking. Then we decide, months before either of us finds out whether it was right, and we call it campus recruitment.
The word that bothers me most is *exposure*. It is the only industry term I know that means: we are going to take something of value from the person who has least of it, and describe that as an opportunity.
So the rule inside HFW is the boring one. Where it is work, we pay for it, and we write the terms down before anybody starts.
Open by design, not just for us
The groups are organised by what people are actually trying to do rather than by what we happen to be hiring for. Most of them have nothing to do with us. Delhi Game Nights is not a recruitment channel.
The seven campus groups are the exception, and they are deliberately closed: verified students and alumni of that campus only. A campus group that lets anybody in is just another forward chain, and the restriction is the entire reason the opportunities posted there are real.
We are appointing campus ambassadors to run them — students who already organise things, who know who the good people in their year are, and who will tell us when we are getting it wrong. That last part is a job requirement, not a courtesy.
I do not think this fixes the industry. It is one company’s attempt at the version we can control. If it works, it will be because the people running it on each campus took it seriously.

Join any group that matches your interests. All groups are moderated, inclusive and free. The seven campus groups are restricted to verified students and alumni of that campus — that restriction is the whole reason the opportunities posted in them are real.
